Application of the Petrotape system to couplings and flanges
Back to Petrotape system overview
Surface preparation
Remove all loose mill scale, paint (that is not supposed to be there), old coating and the like by abrasive blasting or wire brushing.
File down all protruding sharp points and rough edges. Wipe off all moisture on the coupling with a dry, clean cloth.
Priming
Apply either Petroprimer by brush or Petropaste by gloved hand to the clean, dry coupling surface. Ensure a uniform coating over the entire pipe surface.
Avoid doing the priming application in wet or very dusty (with wind) conditions.
Please note that the Petroprimer is flammable and so all necessary precautions should be taken, specially with regard to open flames (such as cigarettes) near to the storage or application sites.
Mastic
Pack Petromastic into and around the coupling / flange / irregular shape to provide an even contour around which the tape can be later applied. The mastic putty should be packed so as to cover all bolts, bolt heads and any other irregular shapes which would otherwise leave air pockets if only a tape were applied.
Tape
A sufficiently wide width of Petrotape shall then be applied over the whole coupling or flange overlapping by about 25%. The tape is then smoothed by hand following the contour of the joint, thus eliminating any air that may be trapped underneath the tape.
Plastic
An outer layer of layflat sheeting of sufficient width to cover the whole joint is then applied over the tape with about a 50% overlapping of the ends. Each side of the plastic is then secured to the joint by using the self adhesive securing tape which is wrapped around the plastic covering on each side of the coupling.
